Es gibt zwei Wege, wie Pflanzen Nährstoffe aufnehmen:
Das Modell mit der Ernährung von Pflanzen mit anorganischen Ionen ist in der Mainstream-Landwirtschaft etwa seit Hundert Jahren etabliertes Wissen. Der zweite Weg der Aufnahme ganzer Bakterienzellen wird in der Literatur etwa seit den 1950er und 60er Jahre beschrieben und es davor bereits ansatzweise erste Beschreibungen.
